BLUES GUITAR PROGRESSIONS need not be so complicated. smile
Here’s a quick look at how 12 Bar songs are generally organized ….

IV / IV / I / I

V7th / IV / I / I

This can be understood as …. (12 bar progression in A major)

A / A / A / A

D / D / A / A

E7 / D / A / A

or (12 bar progression in E major)

E / E / E / E

A / A / E / E

B7 / A / E / E

Blues songs use the minor key and are organized in the following way ….

I7 / I7 / I7 / I7

IV / IV / I7 / I7

V / IV / I7 / I7

Here’s an example of a 12 Bar Blues Progression (Key of A blues = Am) …

A7 / A7 / A7 / A7

D / D / A7 / A7

E / D / A7 / A7

In each example of the above 12 bar songs, the last measure ( 12th bar ) can have a turnaround substituted for the standard last measure.

A7 / A7 / A7 / A7

D / D / A7 / A7

E / D / A7 / E <—– turnaround measure (the V chord is substituted or a lick that brings the song back to the 1st measure.
